It was the first day of summer when I met Desiree for a virtual coffee—both of us working from home (but not seeing clients) in our pajamas. We instantly clicked, bonding over our shared experiences as moms who’ve navigated infertility, postpartum anxiety (PPA), and the juggle of being working moms. We connected over our mutual passion for helping moms in the thick of it, and how we both shifted our careers to ensure other moms didn’t face the same overwhelming welcome into motherhood we did.

Desiree is a certified pediatric sleep consultant who specializes in helping parents—especially moms—navigate sleep challenges for their babies and toddlers. She is passionate about providing local support to Washington moms who are struggling with sleep issues and might need some extra help along the way.

Some of the most common sleep challenges she helps families with include:

  • Frequent night wakings in babies and toddlers

  • Bedtime battles (especially with toddlers)

  • Early morning wake-ups and how to deal with them

  • Eliminating sleep associations, like nursing or rocking to sleep

Desiree understands just how hard it can be to deal with poor sleep as a new mom—and how frustrating it is when you can’t find the right support. Her own journey into sleep coaching began when she reached her wit’s end as a mom to twins, having gone through infertility treatments and then experiencing postpartum anxiety.

At that time, baby sleep wasn’t talked about in a supportive, science-based way. So Desiree took matters into her own hands—learning everything she could about sleep science, baby sleep routines, and child development. Eventually, her passion and knowledge grew so much that she knew she had to make it her career.

How Do You Know When It’s Time to Reach Out for Sleep Support (from a Sleep Coach)?

That’s a great question because the answer really depends on the individual parent and whether they feel ready for a change. Every family has unique dynamics, beliefs, and cultural values around sleep. But if you’re feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, or thinking, “Something needs to change. This isn’t working for us anymore,” that’s often the sign it’s time to reach out for sleep coaching. You don’t have to wait until you’re at your breaking point—working with a personalized sleep coach can offer clarity, reassurance, and a custom sleep plan that actually fits your family’s unique needs.

How Do You Approach Sleep Training vs. Co-Sleeping? What’s Your Sleep Philosophy?

I fall somewhere in the middle. I’m not strictly pro-sleep training or pro-co-sleeping. If co-sleeping works and everyone is getting quality rest (which is just as important, if not more, than the number of hours of sleep), there’s no need to change it. However, if sleep feels unsustainable, it may be time to explore a new approach.

What Is the Most Common Myth About Baby and Toddler Sleep?

“Never wake a sleeping baby!!!” Although this is kind of true for a newborn, it’s not true once your baby is about 3-months old. If a baby sleeps too much during the day, it can cause night troubles. Or if a baby sleeps too much at night, it can cause short naps and nap resistance. A consistent, age-appropriate sleep schedule is important, which means waking your baby at specific times to ensure you are capping day sleep to protect night sleep and vice versa.

What Makes Your Personalized Sleep Coaching Different from Books or Online Advice?

Unlike books or online forums, I offer personalized 1:1 sleep coaching tailored to your child’s specific sleep needs and your family’s goals. While forums can be helpful, the people offering advice there aren’t doing this work every day like I am. They’re not trained or seeing patterns across the hundreds of children I’ve helped in the last eight years. I create custom sleep plans, provide ongoing guidance to keep parents on track, and offer a high level of handholding plus lifetime support, so you’re never left figuring it out on your own. I love when my families grow with me!

What’s One Thing You Wish All Parents Knew About Baby and Toddler Sleep?

Every baby is different, and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to sleep. Baby sleep programs like Taking Cara Babies can be helpful for general education, but they don’t take into account your baby’s unique sleep needs or temperament. Your little one may need more (or less) sleep than another baby the same age. Sleep isn’t cookie-cutter, and personalized sleep support can make a big difference.
